Art Mob
Terry Allen’s lyrics applied loosely to a few thousand Lubbock folks on Friday night, June 2. Awhile back Lubbock established a Friday Night Art Trail. I went to several galleries and locations about a year ago – by myself. I knew it would be such fun with a group of friends and last Friday night proved me correct.
On the first Friday of this month I chauffeured friends around. Our first stop was a car dealership, set up as an art gallery for the night. (only in Lubbock???) There was a wonderful variety of pottery, oil paintings, and pencil and ink drawings. My neighbor, Carol Howell, is a fantastic artist and hers were the oil paintings…she keeps a number of paintings on display at Café J. The potter’s work was really unique and affordable. I hope we can find him with a display of his art another time. Alisa bought a dachshund stationary set from the ink drawing artist.
Our next stop was the Underwood Center for the Arts and it was an eclectic mix that included some potter and wood carver demonstrations. There were sketching, photo manipulation pieces that related to women's sexuality and seemed to focus alternative sexual orientation. Yes, my friends will laugh at how tactfully I’m wording that.
We spent an hour or so at La Diosa…slipped in early enough that we did not have to pay a cover charge for the live music. We had Sangria wine (shared a pitcher – thanks to the youngest amongst us for that suggestion) and a variety of appetizers and chatted and gossiped and laughed. (did I mention they served wine at most of the galleries?)
Then we hit another gallery where we saw a series of photos of a young man…at first he was partially clothed and it seemed harmless enough but then we stepped into the adjacent room and doodeedooodooo, doodeedooodooo, twilight zone shocker - an intimate grooming photo that we will never live long enough to block from our minds. (Real men don't eat quiche and I don't think real men shave there either.)
Our last stop of the evening was the Buddy Holly Center…there was a wonderful variety of watercolor paintings displayed. We each found something we loved, being drawn to either the colors, subject matter, or technique or sometimes what we loved about a painting was inexplicable.
It was one of the best girl friend evenings I’ve ever spent. I hope we can do it again.
